Bobby Rush: The King of the Chitlin’ Circuit Blues
Born Emmett Ellis Jr. on November 30, 1933, in Homer, Louisiana, Bobby Rush is a charismatic singer, guitarist, and songwriter whose career spans more than six decades. Blending blues, funk, soul, and humor, Rush became a standout performer on the Chitlin’ Circuit, entertaining audiences with his energetic shows, playful persona, and gritty, soulful sound.
Rush began performing in the 1950s, honing his craft in juke joints, clubs, and street corners across the South. His music combines traditional blues storytelling with funky grooves and comedic flair, earning him hits like Chicken Heads, I Ain’t Studdin’ You, and Fishin’ in My Pond. Known for his flamboyant costumes, signature cowboy hats, and high-energy performances, Rush turned every show into a spectacle while staying deeply rooted in blues traditions.
