Bukka White: The Delta Blues Guitarist and Storyteller
Born Booker T. Washington White on November 12, 1909, in Houston, Mississippi, Bukka White was a seminal Delta blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter whose powerful voice and rhythmic guitar style influenced generations of blues and rock musicians. Known for his percussive, driving playing and deeply expressive storytelling, White captured the hardships, humor, and resilience of Southern life in his songs.
White began performing as a teenager, traveling the Mississippi Delta and learning from blues pioneers like Son House. He gained national attention in the 1930s with recordings for the Victor label, including Shake ’Em On Down and Parchman Farm Blues, the latter reflecting his own time in the infamous Mississippi prison. His work combined traditional country blues with unique vocal phrasing and slide guitar techniques that set him apart from his contemporaries.
Though he stepped back from recording for several decades, White experienced a revival during the 1960s folk and blues resurgence, performing at festivals and influencing artists like Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, and Taj Mahal. Bukka White passed away on February 26, 1977, leaving behind a legacy as one of the rawest, most authentic voices of the Delta blues tradition.
