Honeyboy Edwards: Delta Blues Storyteller
David “Honeyboy” Edwards, born June 28, 1915, in Shaw, Mississippi, was a legendary Delta blues guitarist and singer whose career spanned over eight decades. A contemporary of Robert Johnson and a close friend of Muddy Waters, Edwards was known for his storytelling through music, capturing the hardships, humor, and resilience of life in the Mississippi Delta.
Edwards learned to play guitar as a child and began performing on the streets and at juke joints, developing a distinctive fingerpicking style and emotive voice. His recordings, including The Real Delta Blues and Mississippi Delta Blues, showcase traditional country blues with authenticity and depth. Beyond his music, Edwards was a living link to early blues history, sharing firsthand stories of the Delta scene, its musicians, and the cultural context that shaped the genre.
Honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010, Edwards continued performing well into his later years, preserving the legacy of Delta blues for new generations. He passed away on August 29, 2011, leaving behind a rich body of work and a unique perspective on the origins of American blues.
Honeyboy Edwards remains celebrated as both a master musician and an invaluable chronicler of blues history.
Grego’s notes: “Not many of the old timers left, when Honeyboy passed it was like losing a time capsule – boots on the ground in a forgotten time. Clearly the music still live son and thrives, and there are young stars on the horizon – but Honeyboy was something special.”
