Furry Lewis: Memphis Blues Guitarist and Storyteller
Born Furry Lewis on September 6, 1893, in Greenwood, Mississippi, he was a seminal blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter associated with the Memphis blues tradition. Known for his intricate fingerpicking, expressive vocals, and compelling storytelling, Lewis became a bridge between early country blues and the urban blues sound of Memphis.
Lewis began performing on the streets and in juke joints as a young man, gaining a reputation for his skillful guitar playing and engaging presence. He recorded for labels like Vocalion in the late 1920s and early 1930s, producing songs such as Kassie Jones and I Will Turn Your Money Green, which showcased his melodic sensibility and narrative lyricism. After a long hiatus from recording, he experienced a career revival in the 1960s during the blues and folk revival, performing at festivals and inspiring a new generation of blues musicians.
Furry Lewis passed away on April 14, 1981, leaving behind a legacy as one of Memphis blues’ most authentic voices. His music remains a vital link to the roots of American blues, celebrated for its artistry, emotional depth, and historical significance.
