George Strait was born on May 18, 1952, in Poteet, Texas, and grew up in the small town of Pearsall. After serving in the U.S. Army, he began performing with a Texas country band before signing a recording contract in the early 1980s.
Strait helped lead the neotraditional country movement, bringing country music back to its roots at a time when pop influences were becoming more common. His first major hit, “Unwound,” launched a career that would become one of the most successful in country music history.
Some of his best-known songs include “Amarillo by Morning,” “The Chair,” “All My Ex’s Live in Texas,” “Check Yes or No,” “I Cross My Heart,” and “Troubadour.” Known for his smooth voice, cowboy image, and traditional sound, Strait earned the nickname “The King of Country.”
Over his career, he recorded more than 60 number-one hits and sold millions of albums worldwide. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006 and has remained one of country music’s most popular touring artists.
George Strait’s influence on modern country music is enormous, with generations of singers citing him as a major inspiration and a standard-bearer for traditional country music.
