Guitar Slim: Electrifying Blues Innovator
Born Eddie Jones on December 10, 1926, in Greenwood, Mississippi, Guitar Slim was a pioneering blues guitarist and singer whose fiery playing and flamboyant stage presence left an indelible mark on electric blues and rock ’n’ roll. Known for his heavily amplified guitar, soaring vocals, and innovative techniques, Slim helped shape the sound of modern blues and influenced generations of guitarists, including Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy.
Slim rose to fame in the early 1950s with his landmark hit The Things That I Used to Do (1954), which topped the R&B charts for weeks. The song’s distorted, overdriven guitar tones and emotive singing were revolutionary at the time, blending gospel intensity with urban blues energy. Throughout his career, Slim was known for his dynamic live performances, often combining showmanship, improvisation, and virtuosic guitar work.
Despite passing away young in 1959 at age 32, Guitar Slim’s recordings and style left a lasting legacy. His electrified approach to blues guitar helped lay the foundation for rock ’n’ roll and inspired countless musicians to push the boundaries of the instrument.
Grego’s notes: “I got my first Guitar Slim record as a 45 single in the pile of vinyl I got at an auction…. the box smelled like mildew and almost everything in it was trash…. until I found a small group of Blues discs – Slim being one of them – we used to have to do crazy things before youtube to seek out artists we had not heard of yet – this was in the 80’s I recall. Kind of my first listen of what I think of as ” the Louisiana guitar lick”…. I miss those days of record treasure hunts at garage sales.”
