John Prine was born on October 10, 1946, in Maywood, Illinois, near Chicago. Before becoming a full-time musician, he worked as a mailman while performing at folk clubs around the city.
Prine’s self-titled debut album, John Prine, was released in 1971 and featured songs that would become classics, including “Angel from Montgomery,” “Sam Stone,” “Paradise,” and “Hello in There.” His songwriting combined humor, heartbreak, and sharp observations about everyday life.
Over a career that spanned five decades, Prine released numerous acclaimed albums and earned a reputation as one of America’s greatest songwriters. His songs were recorded by artists including Johnny Cash, Bonnie Raitt, Bette Midler, and George Strait.
Later in life, Prine became a beloved resident of Gulfport, where he spent much of his time when not touring. He continued writing, recording, and performing well into his seventies.
John Prine won four Grammy Awards, received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He died on April 7, 2020, at the age of 73, leaving behind a catalog of songs that continue to inspire musicians and songwriters around the world.
