Johnny Cash was born on February 26, 1932, in Kingsland, Arkansas, and grew up in Dyess, Arkansas during the Great Depression. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he moved to Memphis and signed with Sun Records, where he recorded alongside Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins.

Cash became famous for his deep voice, simple arrangements, and songs about working people, outlaws, faith, love, and redemption. His early hits included “I Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” and “Ring of Fire.”

Known as “The Man in Black,” Cash often performed for prison audiences and became one of country music’s most recognizable figures. His live albums recorded at Folsom and San Quentin prisons are considered classics.

Throughout a career spanning nearly five decades, Cash recorded hundreds of songs and crossed the boundaries of country, folk, gospel, rockabilly, and rock music. In the 1990s, producer Rick Rubin helped introduce him to a new generation through the acclaimed American Recordings series.

Johnny Cash died on September 12, 2003, at the age of 71. He remains one of the most influential and respected artists in American music history.
