What one of my customers had to say:
“I ordered a custom painting of Tommy Johnson from you and it exceeded my wildest dreams – it’s proudly displayed in my home and everyone who comes over is mesmerized”” – Pete J. – Hawaii
In the final decade of his life, blues guitarist Johnny Winter experienced a remarkable resurgence that reaffirmed his place among America’s greatest musical storytellers. After years of health struggles and personal challenges, Winter entered the 2000s determined to reclaim his legacy. Shedding unreliable management and regaining control of his career, he returned to touring with renewed vigor, his performances marked by grit, precision, and undiminished passion.
Winter released a series of acclaimed albums on his own Megaforce Records label, including Roots (2011), a heartfelt tribute to the bluesmen who shaped him, and Step Back (2014), featuring collaborations with Eric Clapton, Joe Perry, and Ben Harper. The latter earned him a posthumous Grammy Award, underscoring his enduring influence.
Despite frail health, Winter remained on the road until his final days, driven by his lifelong devotion to the blues. He passed away in July 2014 while on tour in Switzerland, just weeks before Step Back’s release. His final decade stands as a testament to perseverance, artistry, and the unbreakable spirit of a man who never stopped playing the music he loved.
Grego’s notes: “I have a picture on my computer that someone sent me of Johnny signing one of these after a show – super cool. Johnny and his brother cast a long shadow in Texas, I lived in Austin for 30 years and there are so many stories of folks playing with him, seeing him and the rest…. a buddy of mine owns his old leather satchel bag – we laugh about what sort of things that bag has sen… and carried. When Johnny did that record with Muddy, it was a real eye opener to me. Instead of being the blazing guitar hero he immediately became the perfect Delta / Chicago slide guy – no easy feat.”
