Little Freddie King: The Gut-Bucket Blues King of New Orleans
Little Freddie King, born Fread Eugene Martin in 1940 in McComb, Mississippi, is a legendary American blues guitarist and singer celebrated for his raw, “gut-bucket” Delta blues style. A cousin of Lightnin’ Hopkins, he brought the Mississippi juke-joint sound to New Orleans, where he’s become a cornerstone of the city’s modern blues scene. Known for his gritty vocals, electrifying guitar riffs, and storytelling lyrics, King has survived a lifetime of hardship and triumph—earning spots in the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and on the Mississippi Blues Trail. With songs like “Bad Chicken” and “Cleo’s Back,” Little Freddie King remains one of the last true torchbearers of authentic Southern blues.
