Lynyrd Skynyrd was formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1964 by Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Larry Junstrom, and Bob Burns. The band spent years playing clubs and honing its sound before breaking through nationally in the early 1970s.
Known for combining blues, rock, and country influences, Lynyrd Skynyrd became one of the defining bands of the Southern rock movement. Their debut album, Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd, introduced classics like “Free Bird,” while later albums featured hits such as “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Gimme Three Steps,” “Simple Man,” and “Saturday Night Special.”
At the height of their success, tragedy struck on October 20, 1977, when the band’s chartered plane crashed in Mississippi. Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backing vocalist Cassie Gaines were among those killed. The accident brought the band’s original run to an abrupt end.
Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited in 1987 with Ronnie’s younger brother, Johnny Van Zant, taking over lead vocals. The group continued touring and recording for decades, becoming one of the best-selling and most recognizable American rock bands.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 and remains one of the most influential Southern rock bands in music history.
