What one of my customers had to say:
“I love how you don’t just stick to the well known Blues acts, you seem to be a real student of the genre” – Terrl L – Quebec

Mississippi Fred McDowell: The Hill Country Blues Pioneer

Mississippi Fred McDowell (1904–1972) was a masterful American blues guitarist and singer, celebrated as one of the founders of the North Mississippi hill country blues style. Born in Rossville, Tennessee, and later based in Como, Mississippi, McDowell developed a raw, hypnotic slide guitar sound rooted in spirituals and field songs. Discovered in the late 1950s by folklorists Alan Lomax and Chris Strachwitz, he rose to prominence during the 1960s blues and folk revival, recording landmark albums such as I Do Not Play No Rock ’n’ Roll and Amazing Grace. His rhythmic drive and bottleneck guitar technique influenced countless artists, including Bonnie Raitt, The Rolling Stones, and R.L. Burnside. With his plainspoken honesty and deep connection to tradition, McDowell remains a towering figure in Delta and hill country blues history.

Keywords: Mississippi Fred McDowell, hill country blues, Delta blues, slide guitar, bottleneck guitar, Alan Lomax, folk revival, Como Mississippi, I Do Not Play No Rock ’n’ Roll, blues pioneer.

Grego’s notes: “I bought my first Mississippi Fred record without ever having heard him – I said if it’s good enough for Bonnie Raitt, its good enough for me – a wise decision. I love me some Country Blues, and when it’s time to move – you GOT to move!”
