Neil Young was born on November 12, 1945, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. After playing in several bands in Canada, he moved to California in the 1960s and became a founding member of Buffalo Springfield before launching a successful solo career.

Known for his distinctive voice, emotional songwriting, and expressive guitar playing, Young became one of the most influential artists in rock and folk music. His best-known songs include “Heart of Gold,” “Old Man,” “Harvest Moon,” “Rockin’ in the Free World,” “The Needle and the Damage Done,” and “Southern Man.”

Throughout his career, Young moved freely between acoustic folk music and loud electric rock, often backed by Crazy Horse. His willingness to follow his own artistic path earned him a reputation as one of music’s most independent and uncompromising figures.

Many of his songs addressed social and environmental issues, while others explored love, loss, addiction, and life in rural North America. His influence can be heard across generations of folk, rock, country, grunge, and Americana artists.

Neil Young has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice—once as a solo artist and once as a member of Buffalo Springfield. He remains one of the most respected and influential singer-songwriters in popular music.
