Robert Cray: Modern Blues Master Bridging Soul, Rock, and R&B
Robert Cray (born August 1, 1953) is an American blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter known for blending traditional blues with soul, R&B, and rock to create a smooth yet emotionally charged sound that helped revitalize the genre in the 1980s. Born in Columbus, Georgia, and raised in Washington State, Cray was influenced by artists like Albert Collins, B.B. King, and Otis Redding, shaping his distinct blend of fiery guitar work and soulful vocals.
Cray formed the Robert Cray Band in the late 1970s, gaining national attention with the Grammy-winning 1986 album Strong Persuader, featuring the hit single “Smoking Gun.” His crisp tone, sharp songwriting, and crossover appeal brought blues back to mainstream audiences while earning him multiple Grammy Awards and collaborations with icons such as Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, and John Lee Hooker.
