Son House: The Fiery Soul of Delta Blues
Son House (1902–1988) was an American blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter whose raw, emotional style helped define the Delta blues tradition. Born Eddie James House Jr. in Riverton, Mississippi, he was known for his powerful vocals, bottleneck slide guitar, and deeply spiritual approach, often blending gospel fervor with blues storytelling.
House recorded seminal tracks such as “Death Letter Blues” and “Preachin’ Blues”, which influenced later legends including Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and Eric Clapton. After disappearing from the music scene in the 1940s, he was rediscovered during the 1960s blues revival, performing at folk festivals and inspiring a new generation of blues musicians.
Renowned for his intense performances and commanding presence, Son House remains a towering figure in the history of American blues, embodying the spiritual and emotional depth of Delta music.
Keywords: Son House, Delta blues, Death Letter Blues, Preachin’ Blues, slide guitar, bottleneck blues, Mississippi blues, blues revival, Robert Johnson influence, American roots music, spiritual blues, early blues pioneers.
Grego’s notes: “I love Son House – I can’t play it worth a darn – but he’s just so fun to listen to… I did rework Preachin Blues into something I can play but for me his style remains untouchable… such a diverse fella between the church and Blues. I bet he was a hoot to visit with.”
