Sonny Rollins: The Saxophone Colossus of Jazz
Born Theodore Walter “Sonny” Rollins in 1930 in Harlem, New York, Rollins is celebrated as one of jazz’s greatest improvisers and tenor saxophonists. Emerging in the 1950s alongside legends like Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and Clifford Brown, he quickly earned a reputation for his bold tone, rhythmic mastery, and fearless creativity. His landmark album “Saxophone Colossus” (1956) cemented his place in jazz history with classics like “St. Thomas.” Known for his introspective “sabbaticals,” during which he famously practiced on the Williamsburg Bridge, Rollins continually reinvented his sound across bebop, hard bop, and avant-garde styles. Though he retired from performance in 2012 due to health reasons, his influence still echoes through every corner of modern jazz.

Grego’s notes: “I got to meet Lester a couple times in Austin, some of my friends had played with him in the past and they showed him around town… he did a couple pop up shows that were just amazing. A very unique fella to say the least who was very kind and gracious when you would speak with him”
