Today in Blues history – January 26, 1934 – Huey Piano Smith is born

Huey Pierce Smith, known as Huey “Piano” Smith, is an American rhythm-and-blues pianist whose sound was influential in the development of rock and roll. My first recollection of the great piano player was thru a cassette tape owned by my father… as a child we would set up at antique shows all summer long, driving from Michigan thru Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania selling collectibles in the summer when my Dad was off from his regular gig as a high school teacher.

We had a small handheld tape deck and a sparse pile of 50’s and 60’s greatest hits tapes – I immediately fell in love with the boogie woogie sound, but did not obsess on it for almost a decade later. To this day I think back to those long drives and strange and new scenery as we toured the countryside buying and selling antiques.I strongly suggest you add some Huey Piano Smith to your collection if you do not have any lying around… it’s feel good music of a bygone era.
