What one of my customers had to say:
“I’ve been collecting your art for about a decade or so, only have a few originals, but I love them all – thanks Grego for all the cool art” – Nancy K. – Boston

Blind Willie McTell: The Piedmont Blues Virtuoso

Born William Samuel McTier on May 5, 1898, in Thomson, Georgia, Blind Willie McTell was a master of the Piedmont and ragtime-influenced blues, celebrated for his intricate fingerpicking guitar style and rich, expressive voice. Blind from birth, McTell overcame his disability to become one of the South’s most compelling itinerant musicians, performing on street corners, juke joints, and recording studios for decades.

McTell’s career began in the 1920s, and he recorded under his own name and various pseudonyms for labels including Victor and Decca. Signature songs like Statesboro Blues, Broke Down Engine, and Southern Can Is Mine highlight his deft guitar technique and poetic storytelling, blending blues, folk, and early jazz influences. His music was both technically brilliant and deeply human, reflecting the joys, struggles, and humor of everyday life.

Though he remained largely underappreciated during his lifetime, McTell profoundly influenced later generations of musicians, including Bob Dylan, the Allman Brothers Band, and Taj Mahal.

Blind Willie McTell passed away on August 19, 1959, in Milledgeville, Georgia, but his legacy endures as a cornerstone of Piedmont blues—a gentle, yet powerful voice whose music still resonates with authenticity, skill, and heart.
