What one of my customers had to say:
“Got a Robert Johnson painting as a gift last week, I immediately visited and bought my summer wardrobe – too cool” – Tommy V – Sparta, MI

Lightnin’ Hopkins was born Sam John Hopkins on March 15, 1912, in Centerville, Texas. He learned guitar at an early age and was reportedly introduced to the blues by Blind Lemon Jefferson, who occasionally performed in his area.

Hopkins became one of the defining figures of Texas blues, known for his expressive guitar playing, conversational singing style, and ability to create songs on the spot. He often performed alone, using a driving bass rhythm, sharp lead lines, and improvised lyrics that made every performance unique.

His best-known recordings include “Mojo Hand,” “Baby, Please Don’t Go,” “Coffee Blues,” and “Katie Mae.” Over a career that spanned more than four decades, he recorded hundreds of songs and remained a favorite of both blues fans and the folk revival audience of the 1960s.

Lightnin’ Hopkins died on January 30, 1982, at the age of 69. Today he is regarded as one of the greatest acoustic blues musicians in history and one of the most influential artists to emerge from Texas.
