Muddy Waters: The Father of Modern Chicago Blues
Muddy Waters (born McKinley Morganfield, 1913–1983) was a towering figure in American blues, whose electrified sound shaped the future of rock ’n’ roll. Born in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, and raised on the Delta’s plantations, Muddy brought his deep, soulful Delta blues to Chicago in the 1940s, where he plugged in his guitar and transformed the genre. Backed by legends like Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Otis Spann, and Willie Dixon, he recorded classics such as “Hoochie Coochie Man,” “Mannish Boy,” and “I’m Ready.” His powerful voice and swaggering style defined the Chicago blues sound, influencing artists from The Rolling Stones—who named themselves after his song “Rollin’ Stone”—to Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. With multiple Grammy Awards and a legacy etched in every blues riff that followed, Muddy Waters remains the undisputed Father of Modern Electric Blues.
