POCO: Country Rock Pioneers Who Bridged Rock and Americana
Formed in 1968 in Los Angeles, POCO emerged as one of the pioneering bands of country rock, blending harmonies, steel guitar, and rock rhythms into a distinctive sound that influenced generations of musicians. Founded by Richie Furay, Jim Messina, and Rusty Young after the breakup of Buffalo Springfield, POCO became known for hits like “Crazy Love,” “Heart of the Night,” and “Rose of Cimarron.”
Over five decades, the band’s evolving lineup maintained its signature mix of country, rock, and Americana, earning POCO a devoted fanbase and a lasting legacy in the roots-rock movement. Even after numerous personnel changes, including the passing of founding member Rusty Young in 2021, POCO remains celebrated for its pioneering spirit and contribution to the California country-rock sound that shaped the Eagles and other major acts.
