Lead Belly was born Huddie William Ledbetter around 1888 in Louisiana and grew up in Texas. He became one of the most important American folk and blues musicians of the 20th century, known for his powerful voice and mastery of the 12-string guitar.
Lead Belly’s life was marked by hardship, including several prison sentences. While incarcerated, he was recorded by folklorists John and Alan Lomax, who helped bring his music to a national audience during the 1930s.
His songs often dealt with real-life events, prison life, labor struggles, racism, and social justice. Recordings such as “Bourgeois Blues” directly challenged racial discrimination after he experienced segregation during a visit to Washington, D.C. Other well-known songs associated with Lead Belly include “Goodnight, Irene,” “Midnight Special,” “Rock Island Line,” and “Cotton Fields.”
Although he never achieved major commercial success during his lifetime, his influence on American music was enormous. Artists in the folk, blues, country, and rock worlds drew heavily from his songs and style.
Lead Belly died on December 6, 1949, at the age of 61, leaving behind a songbook that helped shape the American folk revival and influenced generations of musicians.
