Sonny Boy Williamson II: Blues Legend of Wit and Harmonica Fire
Born Aleck “Rice” Miller around 1912 in Mississippi, Sonny Boy Williamson II became one of the most distinctive voices and harmonica players in blues history. Known for his sly humor, sharp lyrics, and signature harp tone, he rose to fame in the 1950s through his recordings for Chess Records and broadcasts on King Biscuit Time. His songs—like “Help Me,” “Don’t Start Me to Talkin’,” and “Eyesight to the Blind”—influenced generations of rock and blues musicians, including The Yardbirds, The Animals, and Eric Clapton. A master storyteller both on and off stage, Williamson’s music bridged Delta roots and electric blues swagger. He passed in 1965, but his legend still hums through every harmonica riff.
