Albert Collins: The Master of the Telecaster
Born on October 1, 1932, in Leona, Texas, Albert Collins carved out a singular place in blues history with his icy tone, fiery solos, and electrifying stage presence. Known as “The Master of the Telecaster,” Collins turned his Fender guitar into a weapon of rhythm and emotion, blending Texas blues grit with funk and soul swagger.
Collins began performing in the 1950s, earning a regional following with hits like Frosty and Sno-Cone. His sharp, stinging sound—created by using unconventional open tunings and a capo high up the neck—became instantly recognizable. After a period of obscurity, Collins roared back in the late 1970s, signing with Alligator Records and releasing acclaimed albums such as Ice Pickin’ and Frostbite, which reintroduced his fierce, playful energy to a new generation of blues fans.
Famed for wading into crowds with a 100-foot guitar cable, Collins’ performances were as unpredictable as they were unforgettable. He earned a Grammy Award in 1987 and inspired countless guitarists, including Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robert Cray.
Albert Collins passed away from cancer on November 24, 1993, but his searing tone and icy style remain etched in blues legend—a man whose music could chill your spine and set your soul on fire.
