Professor Longhair: The Architect of New Orleans Rhythm and Blues
Professor Longhair (born Henry Roeland Byrd, 1918–1980) was an American pianist, singer, and songwriter whose innovative style helped define the sound of New Orleans rhythm and blues. Known for his rolling, syncopated piano rhythms and playful vocals, he fused Caribbean rumba, boogie-woogie, and blues into a sound uniquely his own.
Nicknamed “Fess,” he became a local legend with songs like “Tipitina,” “Big Chief,” and “Go to the Mardi Gras.” Although his career had ups and downs, his 1970s revival performances at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival cemented his status as a foundational figure in the city’s music scene. Professor Longhair’s influence can be heard in artists from Dr. John to Allen Toussaint, and his music remains a cornerstone of New Orleans culture.
